This year the EIP Conference launched the Excellence in Policing Awards, sponsored by Alexander, providing forces with the opportunity to showcase and share successful initiatives.
Thirty forces and partnerships from all over the country submitted a total of 65 entries with details of projects that are helping to deliver improved services or increase efficiency or productivity. Details of all 65 entries have been compiled in a compendium of case studies which augments the Guide to Police Performance Management that was produced by ACPO and Home Office in February 2008. You can view or download the compendium here.
The entries were judged by a panel which included representatives from The Home Office, the ACPO Citizen Focus and Performance Management Business Areas and the Award sponsors, Alexander. Four winners were chosen according to pre-determined criteria, which included how the need for improvements was identified, how the action taken met that need and the results achieved. The judging process proved to be so difficult that the panel decided to award commendations to a further five outstanding entries!
The four winning entries were:
Operation Leopard
Essex Police responded to community concerns by using Forward Intelligence techniques to address anti-social behaviour in defined hotspots. Working closely with communities and partners, key individuals are overtly monitored and targeted to achieve significant reductions in crime and anti-social behaviour.
The Connect Programme
Lancashire Constabulary’s approach to improving customer service brought together the principles of lean thinking and business process re-engineering supported by a shift in organisational culture. Widespread use of an appointment system and involving staff in developing solutions to problems is having a marked effect on customer satisfaction, whilst saving response officer time.
Operation Morewood
Merseyside’s approach to improving customer satisfaction employs techniques that mirror operational tasking and co-ordination. The initiative has demonstrably improved this aspect of performance in comparison to the most similar forces and BCUs.
